Getting Fixed

September 30, 2014
The talk these days in our house is something like, “So we’re getting fixed.” Yes I tell them, you are. If you’ve been reading my blog, you will know that in May of this year we found five kittens under our front deck of our house. We moved to a new acreage in April and were greeted by a number of feral cats. Of course the females had to have kittens so we became responsible for a whole mess of cats.
We brought the kittens in the house after they began eating dry food. They were exhibiting signs of feral activity brought on by the behavior of their mothers. This would not do because I wanted to put an end to the feral cat activity at this house.
It’s been almost six months since those kittens were born and yes, they have been trashing my house. I finally decided that it was time to get them fixed so I told them it’s time! They were relieved. I’ve been reading that many people oppose neutering and spaying of animals claiming that it can cause problems. The way I see it, if you are not going to neuter or spay your dogs or cats, keep them contained. Please! Even the feral cats were tired of having kittens.I know because they told me!
After we took the kittens away from their feral mothers, the mother cats left. One was run over on the busy range road just west of our house. They never really lived here; they were pretty much all over the place like feral cats tend to do.
One promise I have made to myself and to the kitties in my area, there will be no more repopulating the neighborhood with kittens, not at my house anyway. Every cat here has a home and is fixed.
The feeling in our house has changed. Since I made the phone call to the Edmonton Spay and Neuter Clinic the kittens have calmed down. You see, I told them once they are fixed they get to go outside and have a whole lot of fun. We do take them outside but we do not let them wander, we do not release them because if they did get away, we would have the same problem we had when we moved in here. Sure I see a feral cat around this area but the word out there is that the feral kitty activity is ending. It is at my house anyway.
My final words are these: If people are such animal lovers why wouldn’t they spend the money and take the time to ensure that the animal population in under control. The way I see it, the cats and dogs are not able to neuter and spay themselves. Feral cats in my county are much too common. There are not enough predators to even out the population so it’s up to people to get control of a problem that they have created. It is my dream that all domestic animals will be treated with love and respect. That’s all we can hope for isn’t it?
