Buddy

Tonight I had an appointment to talk with my niece’s horse, Buddy. My niece Jasmine requested a session a few days ago. I hadn’t heard a word from her horse since she booked it. She said she’d let me know when she was done work today and then I could come on over. As soon as she messaged me today, I felt Buddy get excited that I was going to help him talk to her, and then I felt his fear. And right after that Buddy said he wasn’t going to talk to me, then there was total silence.

As I drove closer and closer to their home at a stable he started talking to me. You see I used to own Buddy’s dad, Beethoven. Beethoven was my first horse. I bought him as a yearling in 2001. My horse boyfriend who later became my husband said when he first saw Beethoven, “You’ll have your hands full with that one.” He was right. So on the drive over to Jasmine and Buddy’s place, Buddy asked me some questions. He said you used to own my dad, why did you sell him. I said something like he was too much horse for me. Later during our session, I told Jasmine that I did not know what I was doing when I was working with and riding Beethoven. If I knew then what I know now, things would have worked out much differently.

When I arrived at the stable there was a children’s Halloween party going on. Jasmine and I talked and Buddy joined in somewhat. Finally he told me that we could enter his stall. Once inside all was okay until the children from the party were playing a game counting stalls in the barn. As they ran down the aisle Buddy turned and pranced in his stall exhibiting anxiety. We exited the stall and when the children left the alley we re-entered his stall. Buddy was clearly agitated but it was because according to him, their noise annoyed him and watching them run made him want to run. Actually he said, he’d like to chase them.

When an animal is scared or has anxiety I send Reiki to them and it eventually calms down. Jasmine told me a few things about Buddy. He does not like his back right leg touched. Immediately Buddy sent me an image of him being kicked on that back leg. He was holding on to the pain that kick had caused and the fear that if he was touched on that back leg the pain would reappear. Often when a horse has an extreme fear of being injured again in the same site, talking with the owner while sending Reiki to that area helps release the trauma at that site. I also send the thought to the horse that even though that has happened there once, I am not going to cause the pain like that event did. I worked at his rear side. The first time I touched him there he quivered. Eventually his nervousness subsided and although he didn’t even want me on his right side, I kept at it until he realized that I was going to stay right where I was and I was not going to hurt him.

Buddy’s dam was an Arab and if you looked at him, you would know that he was all Arab with very little of his sire in his looks. However he was as particular as Beethoven was when it came to his saddle. Buddy said that he did not like his saddle. Beethoven was similar. It took me a while to figure out what kind of saddle Beethoven was comfortable with. When I discovered that, my ride on Beethoven was much more enjoyable than the one where I’d have to pick myself up off of the ground!

Buddy was very curious. He’d look out his stall, come back in the stall, turn around and then look back out. Like the typical Arab he had a lot of energy only Buddy’s was very nervous.

Buddy told us that he didn’t really like where he lived now. He used to live at my sister’s place in BC. He wasn’t fenced in and could go wherever he wanted. Now he was shut in a stall and even when he got to go outside he still wasn’t able to be free and run around. He didn’t understand that he was moved to the stable because it was his home with Jasmine. He’d moved where she was. Finally at the end of his session he understood that the stable was his home. When I explained this to Jasmine, Buddy listened and knew that the change was made so Jasmine could be with him every day.

At then end of our session, I explained to Jasmine that horses like Buddy help people learn. A horse like Buddy that is not an easy horse to own. He will make you a better rider and teach you more horse sense than a horse that does everything without a complaint. This kind of horse is not easy but he does demand excellence, sensitivity and a soft, gentle, quiet yet firm touch.

As I left his stall, Buddy thanked me. I love when they say thank you. It is such an honor and a blessing to hear that. I am so grateful that I was able to help them both.
