Running for Love
Picture
November 1, 2017

Every once in awhile I get such a beautiful session it moves me to tears. Okay, who am I kidding? I take part in sessions like this often! This session in today’s blog was all about love. And isn’t love what drives us?

I went to visit Brutus, a male pitbill at his owner’s home because his owner wanted to know why he ran away. He didn’t always run away. He only did it when she left. She would drive away in her car and he would run off like a shot. Well, almost like a shot. You see he would dig his way under the chain link fence, an area that gave him tons of room to roam but that wasn’t enough. He would just run and run and run. She would come back and have to look for Brutus. Why was he running away? Brutus had an answer for her. He ran away, well not really away. He just ran after her when she drove away. He wanted to be with her so if she drove away, he was going to follow her, find her and stay with her.

Brutus had been in different homes before this owner claimed him at the shelter. Brutus revealed that he had not always been treated with a kind hand. It wasn’t that his previous owner meant to be mean. It was just the owner's way he explained. Brutus didn’t hold it against him. He was glad however, that he was now with this wonderful woman who had such a lovely home and a kind heart. He loved being with her. He got to stay inside, and be with people. He had good food and kind humans.

When his owner asked why he was stressed about traveling in a car, his mind sent me an image of how he used to travel in a vehicle. He would be behind a steel cage and being enclosed like that stressed him out. Even though he didn’ t have a steel cage when he traveled now, the drive still stressed him out. He did want to be with his owner though, so he’d put up with that icky stressful feeling.

Brutus wanted a friend when his owner asked if he wanted anything. He wanted a small dog to cuddle with he replied. Please don’t get a dog like me he added. He said that if she did, they would probably destroy the house while they were playing. I like it when the dog is really honest about how active they can get. Instead he wanted a little friend to snuggle with. He wanted someone to curl up with on the couch when his owner left him alone. He didn’t like being alone and felt really sad and stressed if he was.

Near the end of the session, Brutus jumped up on the couch beside me and laid his head on my leg. His touch was so sweet. I could feel his immense love for people. He was a big sweetheart. Often dog breeds like pitbulls are misunderstood. This guy had such power in his body; I could see how people could fear a dog like this when he was in a full out run. Even his name could seem fearful. I laughed because he was so unlike his name. He should really be named Sweetheart!
