FARRM Fundraiser Event Last Night

Picture
March 21, 2015

Last night I attended a fundraiser for FARRM. FARRM is an acronym for Farm Animals Rescue and Rehoming Movement. F.A.R.R.M. started as an initiative of R.A.S.T.A. Sanctuary, Alberta's premier non-discriminatory, no kill, cage-less rescue. Probably the best part of the evening, well except for the amazing vegan food, was when founder Melissa Foley got up on the stage I was overwhelmed by the emotion that emanated from her about her mission. Her passion filled words grabbed my attention and made me think.

I have written about my point of view before on animals and how they are treated sometimes. I understand that I cannot save THE world but I can make my immediate world a better place. Live as an example I say. This Melissa Foley is a wonderful example of making the animal world a better place.

While it’s true I am fortunate enough to be the voice for many animals. I talk to their owners and family about how the animals think and feel. Some animals however are not so fortunate. I have met animal owners who are unable to look and see what they have created. While it is not my place to dictate to people how they must take care of their families (human and animals) I feel deeply that if we change our behavior about how our pets are cared for and if we share that love and care with others in the world, it will create a much needed ripple effect. Change yourself and you change the world.

I am not really the preachy podium type. It’s true, I like to talk but I also like people to think about who they are and what they have created. I take care to ensure that I take on what I can manage. After my horse husband died two years ago I was faced with the inevitable. I had to downsize my beloved herd. As much as I loved all of those horses I am only one person. I could not successfully manage seven horses so I chose to sell Ralph’s four horses and even sold one of mine. Now I only have two horses to manage. I like to say how many bums do you have? You can only ride one horse at a time so I chose to keep one horse for my bum and one horse for my son’s bum. I feel better about the workload I lessened for myself. I feel even better for the life of the horses that I chose to sell. These horses all moved to wonderful homes where they are being used. The horses I kept are happier too. We spend quality time because the amount of humans matches the amount of horses. I am sure that one day I will add another horse to my herd. I am waiting for that horse to catch my eye and of course, capture my heart. But for now, I have what I want and need. Isn’t that enough?
