In Memory of Peanut

December 17, 2017
Just over three years ago my son and I moved to the area southwest of Stony Plain, to a new home and a new life, short of one year after my husband and my son’s father died in a tragic traffic accident. When I viewed the home we bought, I was so tired of looking for a new home. I viewed our current home and stated; it’s good enough. We looked at it, had our offer accepted and had it inspected in three days. We moved in shortly after.
I had no idea I purchased an acreage with a multitude of feral cats. One kitty in particular was crazy wild. She would look at me and hiss! She scared the hell out of me. She wanted to come in the house. I had no doubt the previous owners had let her in but the image of her attached to my face in the middle of the night stopped me from letting her in. There were two feral mommas at the place. The one that scared me we called Frozen Ears because her ears had been frozen off. The other one, her daughter was curious and not quite so wild. Of course being cats they just had to have kittens. One day in May in 2014 when I was trying to wash the front windows outside our living room, my son Zach said, “Mom, come and look. There are kittens under the deck.”
Being the adult prone to lack of belief in what my kid says (sometimes) I said, “You’re just hearing things,” but I did go and look. Yes, there were five kittens curled up beside the lid of our septic tank. We removed them easily. They were very young, we put them in a kitty carrier and spent the new few months playing with them in what we called, “Kitten Therapy.” Needless to say a couple of them weaseled their way into our hearts. Peanut was one of them. Frozen Ears had only had one kitten, Peanut. Frozen Ears was quite old. Her daughter had four. We knew we’d keep the orange kitten because Zach had always wanted an orange kitten and he finally had manifested one. We also decided to keep Peanut because she was so interesting, tiny, amusing and feisty! The two black ones we decided we would give to my oldest sister who was down a few cats at her country home. The fifth and final one I tried to give away to a woman but after the woman found out her condo did not allow cats, we decided to keep him too. We named him Stripe, obviously because he was striped.
Peanut never failed to amuse us. She was our Christmas tree climber. No one else climbed the tree. They didn’t even try. She climbed the curtains, and loved to sleep with me in my bed. I don’t let animals sleep in my bed usually because they do silly things and wake me up from my delicious sleep. I love to sleep soundly and deeply. She loved to play with Zach when he would take my riding crop and trail it on the ground outside. She would chase it like her life depended on it. She was probably the most amazing kitty we have ever had. We named her Peanut because she was so tiny and her fur resembled the markings on a peanut shell. She ruled the house and the male cats respected that. She was truly remarkable.
Sadly one day last year she went out for an adventure in our pasture and never returned. She’d done that the year before but with a meditation and a walking connecting meditation she returned, hearing the sound of my mind connecting with hers. I tried again but this time I heard nothing. I meditated again and again and received an image of her being attacked by a dog. I asked a psychic friend to connect as well to see what she could see. She confirmed that a large dog that looked like a cross between a large breed, and a coyote or a wolf had attacked our beloved Peanut. I’d seen a dog in my meditation that sort of looked like a German Shepherd but wanted to make sure what I had witnessed in my connection meditation was accurate. It was.
I spent the near year hoping I was wrong but I wasn’t. Finally the time came when I needed to add the female cat energy back to our home. We had too many males in it. All three of our cats were male, my child was male and my horse was male too! I needed the silliness of a female kitten in our home. I knew too that I wanted a polydactyl kitten. I’d had some before. I loved their extra toes and had seen them do amazing things like hold leaves in their paws using their paws just like hands!
I looked on Kijiji two weeks ago and found some polydactyl kittens. I had to drive all the way to Innisfail from Stony Plain, a couple hours south, to get her, but the drive was worth it. When I saw her, I knew she was the one! She traveled well on the way home only making noises for about an hour and then she settled in. She was quite scared for the first few days. Those male cats were really big. Stripe was really pissed she was there. He was quite jealous. I couldn’t trust him around her when I was not in the house so I would put him outside or in the basement when I had to leave. I knew I could trust Tommy, our huge black and white cat so when I went out to work for the day, I left him to babysit her. Even if he went outside in the morning to do his morning business, he always returned to make sure he would be inside the house to take care of her. He was amazing.
It was about one and a half weeks before Stripe finally realized that this female kitten was not going to take my lap away from him. I did some healing on him and her using one of my huge crystals to remove the fear from both of them. I am happy to report that they are fine together now. I can leave them alone and Stripe actually plays with her now. She was very persistent, however, during the introduction time. She would not take rejection from any of the male cats, she kept trying to play with them until all three of them became her friends.
Shaka, our new kitten is actually worse than Peanut ever was. She not only climbs the tree, but also lies inside it. While Peanut climbed the outside of the tree, Shaka climbs the inside by the trunk. When she gets half way up the tree, she lies down inside the tree, hoping she will be able to stay there. She climbs the curtains, goes everywhere I do, if there’s food left laying around, she is into it. Shaka is curious about everything. In short, she is perfect. She is exactly what we needed to balance the energy in our house. We don’t need more than one female cat though. Shaka is enough to balance the energy of three male cats!
