OCD?

August 21, 2015
The other day I had the pleasure of meeting a very special and kind dog. Hunter was a mixed breed that Cara and Jason had got as a rescue when Hunter was six months old. When I arrived at Hunter’s house, he greeted me and my son, Zach with a very energetic bark. As Jason opened the door to let us in, Hunter rushed out the door to smell and greet us, and then rushed back in the house. Clearly this was one highly energetic dog. He was kind too. He said that he just wanted to smell us, then Hunter asked me, "Did you bring anyone else?" and he looked out the doorway to check. He didn't find anyone else so he turned and focussed his attention back inside the house.
Hunter was sensitive too. About one hour before our appointment, after I had washed my hair I heard Hunter say, “Don’t use any hair product.” I absolutely love product for my curly aka frizzy hair. If I don’t use product, then it’s ponytail time for me. He told me twice not to use product and sure enough, I did not use the scented product I usually use on my hair. I explained to Cara and Jason after introducing myself that Hunter was so sensitive that he requested that I not use product in my hair. Cara laughed at this. I told them that often an animal would make a request like this if it has sensitivity to scents. This has happened more than once. Often though, it is a test to see how well I listen. If I do what they say, they trust me and tell everything. Animals also do not want humans to overdo it on the scented products. Why? Because if we do then they cannot smell who we are. We all have very distinct scents. If our natural scents are covered up, then they cannot tell and sense who we are. And of course, scent can be overwhelming.
During our session Hunter revealed an obsession he had with a small rubber turkey. Cara explained that they were moving and while they were going through their stuff, they’d found a chew toy they’d bought for Hunter when they first had him. He was so attached to that toy. He was obsessed with it. During our session he constantly asked someone, usually my son to throw it for him. He would retrieve it wherever Zach threw it. One time it landed in a box and Hunter said, “It’s in a box,” so Zach went up the stairs to get it.
Hunter explained that he suffered from anxiety. He constantly feared being lost, left behind and all alone. He didn’t explain where the fear came from. It may have come from feeling abandoned after his first owners placed him in an animal shelter. He wasn’t sure. The anxiety was real though. Perhaps Hunter soothed himself with the rubber turkey in a way to reassure him that as long as he had the turkey Cara and Jason gave him when they first got him, he would always be with him.
Hunter said that although he really liked Cara, she was really kind he offered. Hunter really connected with Jason. On my drive over, I noticed in the console of my vehicle I had a piece of Dalmatian Jasper. When I parked at their house I was urged by Spirit to bring the stone inside. Oh, this dog’s a Dalmatian I thought but then I knew it was not. Whatever breed this dog was, he clearly had the crazy high energy of a Dalmatian. During Hunter’s session, as I discussed this Dalmatian thing, Cara revealed that Jason had a Dalmatian when he was younger. I felt the tingle of awareness flood my body. I knew that Hunter had been Jason’s dog earlier in Jason’s life. I explained that often our pets return to us because of the deep connection we have with them. I gave the stone to them explaining that I was urged to bring it in. Now I understood why.
During our session I directed Reiki to Hunter. He was so strung out and never quit asking someone to play fetch with his turkey the entire time Zach and I were there. At the end of our session Jason said that Hunter usually settles down and is not usually like he was during our session. I understood why he was so over the top. Hunter really wanted some help with his obsessive-compulsive behavior. Reiki can and will balance energetic imbalances such as OCD. I saw Hunter’s behavior as a worry about being abandoned. I explained to Cara and Jason that animals know our routines. They know when we are returning to them. However they still need to know that we are coming home to them. I suggested that when they leave for work and leave Hunter with their parents, they tell Hunter that they return for him at whatever time it will be. That way Hunter will hear it and will hear them think it too. The first dog I owned knew my routine so well that every time I drove in my driveway when I returned from work, she was sitting looking out my living room window watching me drive in the driveway. I came home almost the same time every week day. She loved my routine and always waited in the same place the same way. I had a saddle horse that knew when I was coming to ride him. He would wait for me by the gate. When I drove in the yard where I kept him, he was ready to go. How did that happen? Telepathy. It’s how our animals communicate. They can sense our energy and know when we are near.
I always explain to my clients that our animals know what we are thinking and what we say. If our animals are stressed out we can reassure them that we are coming home to them by thinking it and by telling them. I also add that if you say that you are coming home by five then make sure you are home at that time. Our animals feel reassured if you do what you said you were going to do. You may feel silly talking to your pets this way but I can assure you that it will help them feel better if they are anxious like Hunter is. If you are uncertain then your pet will feel uncertain too. Our animals react to our energy so make the effort to reassure your pets that you will always be there for them.
